William James’ extensive survey of human spirituality led him to the conclusion that in practice our subconscious needs and desires drive our beliefs, “instinct leads, intelligence does but follow”. This work responds to the contemporary contours of the transcendent forms which shape our actions; tracing tales of struggle and conflict and love and solidarity, and looking obliquely at the panpsychic fictions which bind and divide us – tying us to politics and placing us in history.
